A Love Story In Every Bottle

Some love stories are told in letters. This one is told in wine.

The Amorato range on a table with the Stellenbosch vineyard estate behind it

It begins in Soweto, in a home where the smell of fresh bread drifted through the yard most mornings and the sound of children playing never quite stopped. Lerato grew up there, a young woman rooted in her church and her community, the kind of person neighbours came to when they needed something done. Amos arrived from Nigeria with soil still on his hands, a farmer who had crossed a continent chasing the same thing most of us are chasing: a life worth building.

What grew between them was not supposed to happen, according to the world around them. Different countries. Different tongues. Different everything, on paper. But Lerato and Amos never much cared what was supposed to happen. They cared about what was true, and what was true was that they made each other braver.

Amorato is what came after.

"We didn't set out to make a wine," Lerato says. "We set out to hold onto something. The wine came later, when we realised the only way to explain us to other people was to give them something they could taste."

Every bottle in the Amorato range carries a piece of that beginning. Not as a marketing story bolted on after the fact, but as the actual reason any of this exists.

A Reason To Raise A Glass

Lerato and Amos didn't set out to become anyone's example. But their neighbours started watching, and then people further out started watching too, and somewhere in there Amorato stopped being just a wine and became a small, stubborn proof that love outlasts the reasons people give you not to try.

"We just want people to look at each other a little more openly," Amos says. "If a bottle of our wine gets two people talking who wouldn't have otherwise, that's the whole point. That was always the whole point."

Amorato is now finding its way onto tables far beyond Soweto and Stellenbosch, into homes and restaurants and hands that have never met Lerato or Amos and likely never will. That's alright with them. The wine was always meant to travel further than they could.

So pour a glass, for whoever you're closest to, or whoever you wish you were. That's what it's there for.
